why will optical drives and optical discs come back to life again?

With the rapid development of the PC industry in recent years, the former main component of the computer "optical drive" has gradually been replaced by U disk, hard disk and other storage devices, and gradually faded out of the computer accessories industry. But miraculously, since 2022, this optical drive, which was born in the 1990s, has gradually attracted the attention of some users.

To be honest, as a storage medium with a long history, optical discs, even the latest multilayer Blu ray discs (BD-XL), have many shortcomings.

In terms of capacity, the largest optical disk can reach 128GB per disk, which is not only far less than the level of mechanical hard disk, which is often tens of TB, but also inferior to most U disks.

In terms of speed, the latest 16 speed Blu ray optical drive can achieve a reading and writing level of about 144MB/s, which is still faster than most low-end U disks and memory cards, but there is not much difference compared with ordinary mechanical hard disks. But this speed is not enough for today's mainstream SSDs.

Not only that, optical drives and optical discs have many special disadvantages. For example, when they are used, they must pay attention to dust prevention. Once there is a little dust, fragile discs may be scratched, or expensive bald heads may be damaged. In addition, the operating noise of the optical drive is second only to that of the mechanical hard disk drive, and it must also occupy a large 5.25-inch expansion bit in the chassis. In fact, it is not difficult to see that CD drives and CDs are no longer the configurations that mainstream users must consider for a long time.
